The legend of Azzurrina has been orally handed down for three centuries, before it was written in 1600 along with other legends and folk tales of Romagna, a region in the north of Italy.
According to legend, Guendalina was albino. The popular superstition of the time linked albinism with magical events in nature if not diabolical. This is why her father, the Count of Montebello, had decided to make her always escorted by a pair of guards and did not ever leave the house to protect her from hearsay and from popular prejudice.
Her mother repeatedly dyed her hair with natural plant pigments that are extremely volatile. These, thanks to the poor capacity of albino hair to hold the pigment, had given to her hair blue reflections that originated her nickname Azzurrina.
The legend tells that on June 21, 1375, the day of the summer solstice, Azzurrina was playing in the castle of Montebello with a ball of rags, guarded by two armed men, while outside a storm was raging. According to the report of the guards, the little girl chased the ball that fell in the underground ice box. Hearing a terrible scream from the underground, the guards ran into the room but found no trace of the girl. Her body has never been found.
Legend has it that the ghost of the girl is trapped in the castle and comes back to make herselves heard during the summer solstice every five years.
